Writing a blog post is only the beginning. The most important work can happen after you press “Publish.”
To get your content read, you need to let people know about it. The infographic below gives 30 ways you can promote blog posts. You don’t have to do all 30–in fact, you probably shouldn’t do all 30.
My advice? Here goes:
Do all or most of the first 10 (Social Media and Bookmarking Sites). This should only take a few minutes at most, and can bring you lots of new readers as the post is shared by your fans and followers. Some of this can even be automated. For example, you can send your RSS feed to Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites.
Do at least two of the next five (Your Contacts). Your blog likely has an RSS feed, so you are probably doing that already, even if you don’t know it. Make it easy for readers to subscribe to your feed by making the feed address obvious or providing a way to subscribe to your blog via email. (Aweber is great for that.)
You may not do 16 – 20 (Other Blogs) every time you post, but all are good ways to promote your blog. (One comment on number 17: If you want to use your post as a guest post on other blogs it should be completelyrewritten, not just slightly.)
And, as suggested in the graphic, choose a few of the sites listed in 21 – 30 to syndicate your content. No, it’s not duplicate content, it’s syndication.
There are, of course, many other things you can do to promote a specific blog post or your blog overall. You can’t do everything, but doing at least a few of these things on a regular basis will generate much more traffic to your blog and help you to reach more readers.
What do you think? Are there some good ways to promote that aren’t listed here?
